With flexibility and inclusion in mind, the conference will feature various ways to participate including presentations, panel discussions, roundtables, and (potentially) a poster session. The goal is to promote discussions between people from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, all focused on the state of drug and addiction research in the US. We seek expansive and diverse approaches to the subject through cultural, social, policy, therapeutic, and historical investigation.

We invite submissions from areas including the humanities, social sciences, criminal justice, public policy, political science, psychology, and other “hard sciences.” With the theme of “Across the Divide,” this conference seeks submissions that specifically outline new research in drug studies and substance use disorders while clarifying methodological foundations. We similarly welcome research that is specifically cross-disciplinary.

This conference has no registration fee.
Participants must be affiliated with the CU system.
We welcome scholars of all stripes and career levels, including undergraduates, graduate students, and trainees.

Call for Papers 2024, CU CIDAR:

“Across the Divide: Advancing Interdisciplinary Discourse on Substance Use from Arts to Sciences.”

With the nation awash in the present opioid crisis, a crisis related to drug arrests and incarceration, and ever more complicated socio/economic matrices related to the drug trade, there is an exigent need for new approaches to drug, alcohol, and addiction research. We propose a conference focused on contemporary approaches to substance research writ-large with the goal of cross-disciplinary discourse. In particular, we aim to create a collaborative environment in which scholars and researchers from a range of fields come together to discuss their work. Thus, the theme of this inaugural conference is “Across the Divide” – aimed at bridging the gaps between disciplinary approaches and knowledge. For this inaugural meetings, submissions are limited to CU-affiliated scholars and researchers.

Submissions:
Participants must be affiliated with the CU system. Please submit abstracts of 250 words outlining your project or study. What methods/theories might benefit disciplines outside of your own? How are they applied?

Hard Sciences and Narratives – How can qualitative and quantitative data sets work in concert? How might the hard sciences integrate forms of ethnography and history into their research? What are examples of policy and narrative working in productive concert?

Disciplines in Context – What are the limitations created by disciplinary silos and blindspots? What are the limitations in your own field? How might we address those sticking points?

Call for Collaborations – What do you need as a scholar in your field to best bolster the work you are doing?
